In the context of Pakistan, workplace incivility, encompassing incivility, abuse, and harassment, persists as a prevalent yet underreported predicament, notably within academic institutions. The primary goal of this study is to thoroughly understand the phenomenon of workplace incivility experienced by faculty members, including examining its multifaceted consequences and exploring a framework of coping strategies employed by participants in dealing with such adversities to mitigate such issues in higher educational institutions of Pakistan. In this study, the researcher employs a qualitative inquiry grounded in the interpretive worldview and adopts an inductive approach. This study utilizes a descriptive phenomenological method to vividly portray the experiences of faculty members of higher educational institutions subjected to various forms of workplace incivility. There are 17 faculty members of higher educational institutions who were interviewed and who gave detailed accounts of their encounters with workplace incivility; they were selected using the snowball sampling technique. The transcripts from the participants’ interviews were analyzed using a phenomenological method through Atlas.ti software, which elucidated four themes and 21 subthemes. The findings were discussed through Social Network Theory for comprehending and exploring disrespect within Pakistan’s higher educational institutions. This research assisted in illuminating and comprehending the lived experiences stated by faculty members who participated in this study. The interview findings revealed numerous unexpected facets of the incivility episode, such as the significance of breakdown of communication, gender biases, cutthroat competition, and psychological impacts on mental and physical health, as well as exacerbating perpetrator-victim relationships. Six coping strategies adopted by faculty members comprise the level of acceptance, Higher Education Commission (HEC) role, building strong bonds, training and workshops, tit for tat, and use of political skills, developing a framework of coping strategies to alleviate workplace incivility. This research significantly contributed to uncovering the phenomenon of workplace incivility in Pakistan’s higher educational institutes under the theoretical underpinnings of the Social Network Theory’s perspective. It offered a valuable framework for examining workplace incivility by focusing on the structure of relationships and interactions within higher educational institutions, understanding how uncivil behavior spreads through these networks, and developing more effective coping strategies for prevention and intervention, ultimately fostering a more respectful and civil workplace environment. The faculty members of higher educational institutions, higher management, human resource departments, and Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC) can use the study’s findings to create policies and eradicate a nondiscriminatory culture to reduce instances of workplace incivility in Pakistan’s higher educational institutions. Furthermore, this research advocates for HEC to develop a national-level policy in which incivility should be addressed vividly. Thesis
