The expansion of the tourism industry subsequently leads to increased tourism activities with inevitable depreciative attitudes towards natural resources, environmental settings, and wildlife in a disturbance-sensitive nature-based area in the shape of ecotourism destinations. Such unsustainable tourism consumption can be seen to vex Langkawi Island intensely. In response to this problem, the pro-environmental behaviour of tourists helps reduce the friction between tourism progress and environmental harm, besides reinforcing the sustainability of tourism development and ecological conservation. Previous studies have outlined the antecedents of pro-environmental behaviour to achieve this outcome, such as perceived ecotourism design affordances, environmental identity, and sustainable intelligence. For all of them to form a rational and comprehensive model, the theories of affordance and Gestalt are adopted, capturing the complexities of visitor experiences and their subsequent behavioural responses. Therefore, the thesis aims to analyse the interrelationship of perceived ecotourism design affordances, environmental identity, sustainable intelligence and pro-environmental behaviour of tourists in Langkawi island. A quantitative research design was applied where the questionnaire was self-administered to 239 tourists in Langkawi Island through purposive sampling. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software was applied to conduct a descriptive analysis of the respondents' demographics. Then, Partial least square-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was employed to assess the measurement and structural models to test the hypothesis. It can be revealed that perceived ecotourism design affordances of functional/aesthetic and social/symbolic significantly impact the tourists’ environmental identity. At the same time, developing tourists’ environmental identity leads to the formation of their sustainable intelligence. Within this interrelationship, environmental identity significantly mediates the relationship between perceived ecotourism design affordances of functional/aesthetic and social/symbolic with sustainable intelligence. Consequently, tourists’ pro-environmental behaviour is significantly influenced by sustainable intelligence. The empirical verifications from this study are considered crucial theoretical contributions to the tourism body of knowledge, given the scarcity of research regarding the relationship between product design and tourist behaviour. The findings generated from this study will also be an invaluable resource for industry practitioners, policymakers, and academicians to formulate sustainable tourism strategies that protect the interest of the ecotourism industry in Langkawi Island. 2024-09-26 uuid:45E24CC5-B34F-4C50-BAEC-4F013DF999CA EXAMINING PRO-ENVIRONMENTAL BEHAVIOUR AND ITS ANTECEDENTS IN THE CONTEXT OF LANGKAWI ECOTOURISM (MASTER_2024).pdf Sustainable Tourism Pro-Environmental Behaviour Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) Sustainable Intelligence Tourist Behaviour Langkawi Island Gestalt Theory Ecotourism — Environmental aspects — Malaysia — Langkawi Environmental protection — Citizen participation Thesis |
