Indeed, the ability to read has become a mandatory lesson to learn based on the Indonesian curriculum standard. However, in current situation, EFL students in Indonesia still find it difficult to comprehend the reading text given to them. Particularly, in the pandemic Covid-19 period, there are two major issues faced by the EFL students in reading comprehension that are related to linguistic and non-linguistic aspects of the reading. These issues occurred due to ineffective and insufficient reading strategies applied by EFL teachers. In regards to this issue, the EFL teacher should provide effective and sufficient EFL methods in enhancing students’ English reading comprehension. Hence, this study attempted to investigate the effectiveness of using extensive reading strategy in promoting the students’ English reading comprehension ability in a selected senior high school of Indonesia during the pandemic era. Methodology: This study used a qualitative research approach which referred to a case study. The participant was chosen using purposive sampling, comprising one English teacher and 29 students of class XI MIPA III at SMAN 1 Lembar. The participants were selected purposively based on particular criteria. Such as the teacher was elected since she was a qualified English instructor committed by the government as the civil servant in SMAN 1 Lembar who showed eleven years of teaching experiences, particularly in using ERS. Meanwhile, the students were recruited as they fulfilled related criteria of the research, including in registering as the students of SMAN 1 lembar and performed the highest score of reading subject, The data collection techniques of the study applied interviews (oneand- group interviews), and questionnaire with opened-questions. This study addressed a thematic analysis to analyze the data. To help the researcher in doing the data analysis, the researcher used Atlas.ti 9 software that used the thematic model of the data analysis, in terms of transcribing data, coding data, generating data for making themes, advancing theme relationship, and interpreting data. Result: The Extensive Reading Strategy (ERS) was relatively utilized by the English teacher in establishing students’ English reading comprehension ability as the impact of Covid-19 limitation to the short duration of teachings. Moreover, the students testified that using the ERS they were involved in all activities of reading class, in terms of pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading. In addition, the students assumed that the ERS was effective method to enrich their English reading comprehension ability. Conclusion: ERS is an effective instructional strategy to escalate English reading comprehension ability of the students of SMAN 1 Lembar. The finding fortifies the effectiveness of ERS as an instructional strategy in enhancing students’ English reading comprehension ability. Based on this finding, the ministry of education in Indonesia may suggest teachers implement the ERS as an effective instructional strategy in developing students’ English reading comprehension ability.
