The enterprises contribute significantly to job creation, poverty alleviation, enhancement of the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) and improvement of overall economic viability in developing as well as developed countries. Nevertheless, in Nigeria, SMEs are stagnant because of non-performance. Despite various intervention measures, including finance among others efforts, the performance of the enterprises continues to dwindle, and often the situation leads to their failure. Therefore, this study investigated the contribution of entrepreneurial competencies on SMEs performance. As operationalised by the survey, entrepreneurial competencies consist of three distinct variables; entrepreneurial traits, innovation and entrepreneurial marketing. Specifically, the study aimed to examine the impacts of (1) entrepreneurial traits, (2) innovation, and (3) entrepreneurial marketing on the performance of SMEs in Nigeria. This exploratory survey used self-administered questionnaires to randomly collect data from 218 SMEs that represent the population of 1,616 manufacturing SMEs in Kano State, Nigeria. The data of the study were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM), which consist of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, modelling of the multiple regression and correlation among variables. The software used are the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (IBM-SPSS-Statistics) version 25.0 and IBM-SPSS-Amos version 25.0. The result of this study revealed that two constructs; entrepreneurial traits and entrepreneurial marketing have a positive and significant impact on SMEs performance while innovation has a positive but insignificant effect on SMEs performance in Nigeria. The insignificant effect of innovation might be as the result of lack of creativity among entrepreneurs in Nigeria as most of them focus on imitation. This study comes up with the earlier mentioned competencies as a mechanism to improve the performance of SMEs in Nigeria. This study can be of a significant contribution to all SMEs stakeholders in developing and sustaining a good performing SMEs sector. It is hopeful that the entrepreneurs will adopt the proposed skills. Dissertations, Academic Thesis |
