Historically, Nigeria was the major global palm oil producer that accounted for 43% of the total global production. However, since 1970s, Nigeria production of palm oil has declined significantly. In contrast, Malaysia which started later than Nigeria, continues to achieve sustainability in palm oil production and has obtained global recognition. The main objective of this research is to study Malaysian strategies on palm oil industry as a model for Nigeria to improve its palm oil industry as well as to explore the new challenges faced by Malaysia and Nigeria in palm oil industry and their responses. This research is also to examine how Malaysia’s economic policies have resulted in the sustainability of its palm oil industry as compared to Nigeria. This research used the International political-economic theory as its guiding theoretical approach. This research employed qualitative study with exploratory design. It used primary and secondary data. The primary data were collected through a semi-structured interview with six respondents each from Nigeria and Malaysia who were diplomats, palm oil companies’ representatives and academicians. The secondary data were collected from government documents, books, journals, theses, newspapers, seminar papers and articles. This study employed inductive thematic analysis and analyzed the data from the interview using ATLAS. ti. The findings showed that the decline of palm oil industry in Nigeria was due to the petroleum boom in 1970 and its improper policy of agriculture as a source of national income, the civil war, and reliance on the traditional palm oil production system. In contrast, Malaysia achieved sustainability on palm oil due to environmental consciousness and compliance, economic escalation, and social commitment. Due to the decline of its palm oil industry, Nigeria has to emphasize a new approach such as to respond to the best global palm oil practices, implement sustainable economic policies on palm oil, and allocate bigger budget to agriculture instead of 2% annually. The research recommends Malaysian palm oil policies and its strategies in sustaining the industry to be a model for Nigeria to learn and revive its past glory in palm oil industry.
