In Malaysia, some heritage sites are well maintained such as old buildings, tombs, temples, monuments, fossils and artifacts because these sites are able to generate income, especially through tourism sector. However, there are constraints in preserving these heritage sites. Among them are the limited allocation of funds and the lack of awareness among people in preserving and conserving heritage sites. As a result, some heritage sites that should have been preserved are being neglected and abandoned. Therefore, this study aims to highlight Islamic crowdfunding as an alternative fund for the sustainability of heritage sites. This concept is popular as a source of funding in supporting community projects. At the same time, crowdfunding in certain countries such as the United Kingdom, Finland, France and Italy has proven successful in playing a role in the preservation and conservation of historical heritage. This study is a qualitative study in which data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with ten (10) informants from heritage and tourism experts, crowdfunding practitioners and experts in the field of Shariah. The results of this study are presented in the form of thematic analysis in which the data are arranged into several important themes. Next, this study develops a practical Islamic crowdfunding model as a funding platform for the preservation and conservation of heritage sites in this country . The findings show that Islamic crowdfunding has the potential as an alternative fund for the sustainability of heritage sites in this country. At the end, this study proposes a special model by applying the concept of infak in which it has the potential as a practical fundraising instrument. However, at the same time, this effort also has potential challenges in terms of creating awareness among the society as well as there are some Shariah issues related to heritage sites that need to be overcome. Because this study is exploratory in nature, its findings may not cover on all aspects related to the preservation and conservation of tourism heritage sites and Islamic crowdfunding due to the limited number of informants. Nevertheless, this study highlights a practical discussion in proposing an Sharia-compliant crowdfunding model that can be applied as an effort to ensure the sustainability of tourism heritage sites in Malaysia. Although there are limitations from the informant’s point of view, this study provides a practical Islamic crowdfunding model. It is hoped that this study can be a catalyst for efforts to preserve and conserve heritage sites, in addition to being able to solve the problem of funding of tourism heritage sites that are often neglected.
