This situation can be illustrated through the decreasing number of books published as well as the shutdown of many well-known book retailers. It is argued that high operational costs and lower purchasing power among society are the main reasons for this problem. Thus, this study aims to explore the potential of Islamic crowdfunding as an alternative fund for book publishing in Malaysia. It is believed Islamic crowdfunding can be an efficient financial instrument to support the book industry since it is a part of social contributions. This study is qualitative, whereby the data is obtained through library research, and as for empirical, this study applies semi-structured interviews with three different groups: the book industry, crowdfunding platform and Shari’ah scholars. This study explores the feasibility of Islamic crowdfunding which aims to provide funds for small publishers and self-published writers. The findings show that Islamic crowdfunding can be an alternative fund for the book publishing industry. To ensure this funding is Shari’ah compliant so that it would be recognised as Islamic crowdfunding, sadaqah (donation) and hibah (gift) concepts are applied. Since this study is exploratory, its findings may not be generalised in all aspects of the book industry and crowdfunding due to the small number of participants. Islamic crowdfunding model is hoped to link between funders and publishers, particularly selfpublished writers and small publishing companies who are financially struggling to publish their manuscripts. Therefore, talents and ideas from new writers can be realised in published books. While there is a limitation in terms of participants, this study provides a practical Islamic crowdfunding model in which it could be the first one specifically for the book publishing industry in Malaysia. Since the current studies on book publishing in Malaysia are still limited and most of the studies are focusing on the marketing aspect, this study set off as a preliminary step by discussing the financial aspect. It is then proposing an alternative fund through Islamic crowdfunding to financially support this industry in the interest of appreciating knowledge and talent among society.
