However, the application of these strategies is still problematic for students in general, and Yarmouk University master translation students in particular. Many scholars have argued that successful application of TS significantly enhances the quality of the final product. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the commonly used TS among master students who were studying at the Department of Translation, Yarmouk University (YU), Jordan in translating the medical texts from English into Arabic for laypeople. This study is designed as a qualitative descriptive case study research. Data are triangulated using both the quantitative and qualitative approaches. A purposive sampling method was used to recruit the respondents, comprising 113 MA students majoring in translation. This sample was selected for answering the self developed questionnaire, while in-depth, semi-structured, open-ended interviews were conducted with ten experienced students based mainly on their experience and ‘grade point average’ at the master’s degree level. Moreover, two translation lecturers at the same department were selected as participants based on their vast knowledge in medical translation and long experience in teaching translation at YU. The questionnaire items were analyzed descriptively using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26.0 software, while the interview responses were analyzed and coded using Braun and Clarke's (2006) thematic analysis approach. The statistical analysis showed that the respondents employed direct TSs most compared to the other strategies (oblique and additional). Additionally, based on the codification process, four key themes were generated by students regarding the procedures required for applying TSs in translating medical texts, i.e.,, scanning through the medical texts, determining translation theory and determining TSs. All these themes are covered by improving personal skills. On the other hand, lecturers created the other four themes, namely, acquiring preliminary translation skills, general steps for employing TSs, and specific steps for employing TSs. These themes are all covered by focusing on human attitude. Students demonstrated that their unawareness of the TS were due to several factors, which are insufficient training courses, lack of hands-on experience, poor knowledge of these strategies, etc. This study concludes that successful applications of TS and their procedures is crucial in translating medical texts for laypeople. To face these serious challenges, the significance of successful application of these strategies should be taken into consideration by academic lecturers and translation trainers. The findings have major implications on the teaching methods and learning practices in initiating drastic changes for improvement by offering medical translation courses at the academic syllabus, refining curricula goals and organizing training workshops for students and staff.
