There is a trend nowadays that many employers seek for staff who can speak in English confidently, especially in giving presentation. This study aims to shed light on issues related to the phenomena of speaking English language in front of the public among Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin’s undergraduates mainly from the aspects of anxiety and motivation. Besides, other aspects such as achievement in English public speaking sub-course, common structural errors in spoken English and views both from students and English language instructors are also taken into account. This study employed a mixed-method approach where both qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed in tandem to get an in-depth understanding of the issues being researched. Survey by questionnaire was administered for quantitative approach. Meanwhile qualitative approach used students’ presentation, document or text analysis on the language use and interviews. There were 321 students and 11 English language teachers involved in the study. The study revealed that majority of the respondents underwent a moderate level of anxiety during oral presentation where nervousness and stage fright were two most commonly found problems. It also prevailed that integrative motivation was the main factor of the students in learning English public speaking. It was also found that there were a lot of errors in English language structures committed during public speaking presentation. The interviews revealed that students preferred an English class that was fun and taught by teachers who could make conducive and lively learning sessions in a non-threatening environment. Meanwhile the interview results from the English teachers showed that most students experienced anxiety when speaking in front of the class, lack of confidence and were not equipped with proper skills in presentation as well as lack of preparation. Looking at the importance of mastering the English language, especially for presentation purposes, some efforts need to be done in order to help students improve their skills in the English public speaking from the English language structures’ point of view, techniques on how to control and manage their anxiety during presentation as well as exposing them with proper skills in making a good delivery of English public speaking Dissertations, Academic Thesis
