Due to the rise of the implementation of Web 2.0 at higher learning institutions, most English language instructors have applied this new technology as potential in the teaching method. However, the implementation of Web 2.0 in the teaching of English literature has been scarce. Despite much discussion about the integration of Web 2.0 applications in language education, little is known about how these applications work in literature classrooms. While many studies focused on the pedagogical benefits, few studies have explored the implementation of Web 2.0 by literature instructors in transforming the traditional teaching and learning of literature at higher learning institutions. Hence, this study purports to investigate the implementation of Web 2.0 applications by English literature instructors to teach 32 undergraduate students at Ha’il University, Saudi Arabia. This case study employed the qualitative research method to collect data, including semi- structured interviews and observation. Four participants were involved in the study, comprising four literature instructors teaching four different literature courses. Two observations were conducted on each participant in the literature classroom at the English Department of the Faculty of Arts in Hail University. Three in-depth semi- structured interviews were then conducted with each of the participants. Data were coded and analysed using qualitative content analysis and thematic analysis. Open coding was used in the first step, while axial coding was used in the second step to compare fragments from different cases focusing on the same theme or the same code. The actual usage of web applications found in the four cases demonstrated positive results. The participants in this study seemed to bring out a few potentials of web applications. The instructors’ beliefs aligned well with their practices in integrating web applications with literature teaching. Only one participant had a conflict with her beliefs and teaching practices due to related teaching challenges such as lack of necessary training, technical difficulties and supports, individual differences in accepting and incorporating Web 2.0 applications among students, and concerns regarding access, privacy and safety. This study concludes that literature instructors may benefit from embedding web applications with other classroom instructions and activities for the purpose of enhancing the learning outcomes and students' supports. Besides, this study is significant for the course designers, literature instructors, as well as university students to implement Web 2.0 application in the teaching and learning of literature. It is recommended that higher institutions improve the Internet infrastructure for efficient incorporation of Web 2.0 applications in the teaching and learning of literature at higher learning institutions.
