Even though many attempts have been made to improve the speaking competence of medical English students at the University of Tabuk, it was reported that the students still have hindrances in communication, resulting in their inability to communicate fluently in English with their peers, instructors, or patients in their future careers. This study aimed at investigating the impact of task-based instruction on medical English students’ speaking competence at the University of Tabuk in Saudi Arabia. This quasi- experimental study employed a mixed method approach to collect data. 40 medical English students, who passed English one (ELS001) in the first semester in the academic year 2018 /2019 from the Institute of Languages at the University of Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, were chosen as respondents in this study through a purposive sampling method. The speaking pretest/posttest and questionnaires were the quantitative data gathered in the first phase of the study, while for the qualitative data, semi-structured interviews were conducted in the second phase of the study to gather in-depth responses concerning the impact of TBI treatment in the experimental group. The means of the pretest and posttest of the experimental and control groups were analysed using t-test and one-way ANOVA through the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26.0. Meanwhile, the semi-structured interview responses were analysed using a thematic analysis. The findings showed that there was a significant difference in the speaking performance of the experimental group (MD: 7.24, p-value: 0.017 ≤ 0.05) over the control group (MD: 2.3, p-value: 0.061 > 0.05) in the posttest scores; thus, showing a significant impact of TBI in teaching speaking. Results from the interviews showed the positive responses among the participants of TBI. Unlike the previous studies, the findings collected from the questionnaires revealed that some respondents exhibited partial positive or neutral responses towards the treatment tasks, even though they admitted that the tasks were useful in improving their speaking competence. TBI instruction has the potentials in enhancing the English- speaking performance of medical students. This study has implications on the teachers teaching medical English, course designers, and stakeholders to employ TBI in colleges or universities. The study recommends using TBI materials and adopting the TBI method in teaching medical students as a means of improving future medical practitioners in Saudi Arabia. Dissertations, Academic Thesis
