However, this method is rarely applied in the teaching and learning of the vocabulary of global issues, which is essential for students’ worldly exposure to current global issues. Many EFL classrooms have applied the teacher-centred teaching method for vocabulary instruction, which has been asserted as less effective in optimising students’ acquisition of the targeted vocabulary, especially in writing. Hence, this study purports to investigate the impact of cooperative learning method on EFL Yemeni pre-intermediate students’ productive vocabulary knowledge. This experimental study employed a mixed-method research design, in which both the quantitative and qualitative data were employed to collect data. 50 respondents who were undergoing the lessons in MALI in Taiz, Yemen participated in the study. 25 respondents placed in the treatment group were treated with cooperative learning method, while the other 25 respondents placed in control group were treated with a conventional method. The pre-test and post-test (of the same test) were introduced to the experimental and control groups, before and after the treatments. Besides, 25 sets of questionnaire were administered to the 25 respondents in the experimental group after the intervention. Interviews were further conducted with 8 participants selected from those in the experimental group. The quantitative data were analysed using SPSS version 25.0, while the questionnaire feedback was analysed in frequency and percentages. Results showed that the participants in the experimental group performed significantly better than those in the comparison group in the post-test. Meanwhile, the responses obtained from the post-course interview and questionnaires indicated that cooperative learning method had positive effects on students’ vocabulary knowledge in classrooms. Social skills like leadership, decision making, trust building, communication and conflict-management skills were also developed due to the cooperative learning method. Cooperative learning has the potential to enhance the acquisition of students’ vocabulary knowledge of global issues, as well as cognitive and social development. This study is significant in integrating the vocabulary learning of global issues at all academic levels. The study has implications on Yemeni EFL students, English language instructors, as well as administrators in accelerating the teaching and learning of English language in Yemen via an integration of the cooperative learning method.
