They were completely removed from the social fabric of the society. The basic human rights like education, jobs, health and free movement were banned for women and they were restricted to their houses. Khaled Hosseini, an Afghan-American novelist, efficiently depicted the dilemma of Afghan women through his female characters. He was able to give a voice to the deprived women of patriarchal, war torn Afghan society. On the other hand, the great Victorian novelist Thomas Hardy also portrayed the abusive treatment of women at the hands of patriarchal Victorian society. He depicted the political, social, economic, religious and legal exploitation of women through his female characters. This study strived to showcase the similarities in the depiction of female characters of both the novelists. Furthermore, it also dug deep to study the likeness in the sufferings of these characters though set in different societies and time periods. Three novels of Hardy and three novels of Hosseini were selected through purposive sampling. Thematic analysis was employed to identify the themes related to women’s sufferings in the selected novels. The thematic analysis is supported with the feminist critical perspectives proposed by De Beauvoir, Friedan, and Engels. The findings revealed that the female characters of Hardy and Hosseini are victims of domestic violence, workplace harassment, gender oppression and they are deprived of their basic right to education, equality before law and marriage of choice. It is also revealed that reasons of these miseries are patriarchal power, poverty, class differences, gender inequality, envy and non-cooperation, women’s inaction and self-sacrifice. In addition, it is also affirmed that the female characters of both the novelists depicted similar strengths and weaknesses though the novels take a different setting. This thesis concludes that both Hardy and Hosseini associate the sufferings of women to patriarchal and gendered societies where women do not possess equal rights as men. However, the women are partly accountable for their sufferings as they themselves are envious towards other women and do not work together to end their sufferings. This thesis calls for a better attitude in men and women to improve the lived experience of a woman. Dissertations, Academic Thesis
