It aims to identify the students’ discursive construction of identity in their academic writing (ID-AW), their social identity in their academic community (ID-AC), and the potential relationship between the two. The ID-AW and ID-AC of three Jordanian PhD students at Malaysian universities were investigated through a qualitative case study involving semi structured interviews, stimulated recalls, the students’ academic writing drafts and their diaries of daily interaction. The investigation of the Jordanian students’ ID-AC uncovered how they used or avoided opportunities to interrelate, illustrating the link between power relations and the students’ participation. The study showed that Jordanian students’ interactions in their academic community are influenced by their hopes to succeed, future ambitions, desire for recognition and to display knowledge, their cultural attitudes, their sense of alienation, and language proficiency. The students’ ID-AW is based on many factors that seem to have a stronger impact than their active participation in their academic community. The study concludes that the Jordanian PhD students' social background and their participations in their academic community shape their academic writer identities. The ID-AW issues need to be clearly brought to the attention of students so that they can develop the identity of a good academic writer. Dissertations, Academic Thesis
