Accurate and sophisticated use of PVs in writing is highly recommendable to indicate English as foreign language (EFL) learners’ reaching of native-like proficiency. However, it is not often the case with many EFL university students. They still suffer from lack of knowledge and accurate use of PVs, resulting in PV erroneous production, as evident in the writing. Hence, this study aims to investigate phrasal verb errors produced by Jordanian undergraduate university students. This study was designed as quasi-experimental research, employing a mixed method approach to collect data. The quantitative data were collected through a test administered in the experimental phase using the pre-test, post-test, and delayed post-test (of the same test). In the second phase of the study, the qualitative data were collected through a semi-structured interview with five participants in the treatment group. 40 respondents were selected using a purposive sampling from fourth year undergraduate students majoring in English and Literature at the Department of English Language at Al-Balqa Applied University. In this quasi-experimental study, 20 students were placed in the treatment group and the other 20 in the control group. The quantitative data was analysed inferentially using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0, while the qualitative data was analysed in theme using Braun and Clarke's (2006) steps of thematic analysis. Results showed that there is a significant difference in the performance of PVs between the two groups in the post-test (0.000 for the treatment group and 0.386 for the control group) and delayed post-test (0.000 for the treatment group and 0.372 for the control group). Meanwhile, the thematic analyses of the interview findings revealed that the syntactic-semantic aspects were the most common sources for PV errors. EFL students were weak and incompetent in the production of PVs. This study has implications on foreign language syllabus designers, decision-makers, teachers, learners, and the educational institutions in Jordan, in terms of highlighting a tool for enhancing students' understanding and awareness of phrasal verbs in classroom. This study contributes directly to Jordanian EFL students to understand and produce more appropriate and accurate phrasal verbs in writing. The study recommends explicit teaching of phrasal verbs to university students via scaffolding technique as a means of reducing phrasal verb errors and improving vocabulary competence among Jordanian undergraduate students.
