It is about bringing the lexical items together to promote the quality and the coherence of their writing. However, writing coherently is challenging for those learning English as a foreign language in general, and Jordanian learners in particular, as students generally lack proper knowledge and awareness of the use of lexical cohesion. Many researchers indicated that the efficient employment of lexical cohesion in writing considerably influences students’ writing in creating coherent written texts. Henceforth, this study aims to investigate the use of lexical cohesion in the written compositions of undergraduate students who learn English as a foreign language at a Jordanian university. This study was designed as a qualitative case study research. The respondents consist of 30 undergraduate students majoring in English language and literature at the University of Jordan, Aqaba branch, who were recruited using a purposeful sampling method. The written task and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data. Hoey’s model of lexical cohesion was employed to trace the types of lexical items, density of lexical links, lexical bonds, and patterns of lexical cohesion. Additionally, the interview responses were analyzed using Braun and Clark’s (2006) thematic analysis approach, along with ATLAS.ti version 8. The findings showed that the Jordanian students depended on using simple repetitive types, mainly simple lexical repetition. However, it was found that simple lexical repetition was the most frequent type employed by the students, while the other complex types, such as antonymous complex repetition, closed-set word, co-referential, ellipsis were the least employed by the students. Lexical cohesion was found to maintain an active role in securing coherence, and in creating well-organized and meaningful writing. Based on the interview responses, the respondents confirmed that their lack of lexical cohesion awareness in their writing was due to various factors, namely, ineffective educational and instructional practices, negative learning habits, lack of reading, and lack of practice. The study concludes that effective implementation of lexical cohesion is essential in enhancing students’ writing. It has implications on the English language practitioners, material designers, and instructors to examine the coexisting syllabi, textbooks, and teaching methods for the benefits of the students. The present study may contribute in one way or another to the body of knowledge in terms of the lexical theory and pedagogy. Dissertations, Academic Thesis
