Considering the importance of vocabulary, it is necessary for the second language learners to have a sufficient amount of vocabulary knowledge as it will not only improve students’ reading comprehension and writing quality, but also their listening and speaking ability. However, research showed that the common problems faced by the students in vocabulary learning is to retain the new words. Researchers have been examining the possible vocabulary learning strategies that may bring about desirable vocabulary gains to second language learners and mnemonic techniques have shown to make important involvement in students’ vocabulary developments. Hence, this study investigates the performance of the students in learning English vocabulary using mnemonic techniques. Besides, this study also identifies the perceptions of the students towards mnemonic technique in learning English vocabulary and examines the perceptions and the challenges faced by the teachers in using this technique. This study which employed mixed-methods research methodology involved a total of 60 Standard Five students from a day primary school in Melaka and three teachers who are currently teaching the Standard Five classes. The data for the study were derived from tests, questionnaires and interview. The questionnaires were distributed to the learners in the experimental group and the interviews were conducted with the teachers. The results of the study revealed that students using the mnemonic techniques scored higher marks in the post-test as compared to using rote learning techniques. It was also found that the students responded positively towards the usage of mnemonic techniques in learning the English vocabulary. Besides, there were several challenges faced by the teachers in using mnemonic techniques and a lot of effort was needed in preparing the suitable mnemonics materials for the students. The mnemonic techniques could be treated as complementary approaches to compensate the limitations that rote learning techniques have. Dissertations, Academic Thesis |
