However, listening continues to be one of the most difficult skills for Thai EFL learners to achieve, in which they have poor grammatical knowledge to grasp a general idea and have difficulty in understanding accents when they listen to audio and video recordings. Only a few studies attempted to explore how those EFL learners apply listening strategies to solve their listening problems. Hence, this study aims to investigate the listening difficulties faced by Thai undergraduate students at Southern Thai universities. The study adopted explanatory sequential mixed method design, using both quantitative and qualitative approaches, in which questionnaire and semi-structured interviews were used as research instruments to collect data. Probability sampling technique was employed to select as respondents for the questionnaire, while purposive sampling technique was applied to select the interview participants. 88 undergraduate students at Princess of Narathiwas University (PNU) and Yala Rachjabat University (YRU) were selected as respondents to answer the questionnaire, and eight students were selected as participants in the interview. Descriptive statistics and thematic approach were used to analyse data from the questionnaire and interview respectively. Findings from the quantitative phase revealed that the majority of Thai undergraduate students sometimes encountered listening difficulties when they listened to English language recordings which are related to sound, words, meaning, attention and memory. It was also found that the Thai undergraduate students' use of cognitive listening strategies (top-down and bottom-up strategies) reflects the three interconnected stages in listening comprehension which are perception, parsing, and utilization. It was revealed that the use of cognitive listening strategies helped Thai undergraduate students at Southern Thai universities understand the message in English language recording. Moreover, the findings in the quantitative were supported by the findings in the qualitative phase of the study which showed that most of the participants focused primarily on the use of top-down listening strategies in the utilisation stage after they listened to English language recordings. On the other hand, the finding indicated that all participants applied both bottom-up and top-down listening strategies during listening to English language recordings. The cognitive listening strategies applied by them could affect their language proficiency as well as academic performance. This study is significant for Thai EFL learners, English language teachers, public and private institutions as useful resources for English language teaching and learning focusing on listening skills. This research can be valuable in addressing the pedagogical issues among Thai EFL students around the world. Dissertations, Academic Thesis
