There are four types of vocabulary deemed necessary for mastery at the university level, including high frequency words, academic, technical and rare words. However, rare word is the type of vocabulary that English major students are often unable to acquire, especially within a short span of time. Since the alternative to the traditional vocabulary learning method to teach the vocabulary of rare words has been found to be very few, the use of current and attractive multimedia tools such as animated cartoons in teaching the vocabulary of rare words can be employed to shed the lights in overcoming this problem. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the impact of teaching vocabulary of rare words using animated cartoons on UniSZA students’ vocabulary knowledge. The study was designed as an experimental case study, employing a mixed-method approach to collect data. Employing a purposive sampling method, a sample of the study which comprised 50 semester four students of Bachelor of English with Communication at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Terengganu was recruited. In experimental group, students were treated with 50 animated cartoons while 23 students were placed in the control group and treated with the traditional method. The pretest and posttest (of the same test) are the achievement test comprising 50 items. The qualitative data are semi- structured interviews which involved six students from the experimental group to obtain their perceptions on using animated cartoons in improving the vocabulary knowledge of rare words. The Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test were utilized to analyze the pretest and posttest results. Semi-structured interview responses were analysed manually in theme. The result of Mann-Whitney U test indicated a significant p-value of 0.00 (p ≤ 0.05), showing the significant impact of teaching the vocabulary of rare words using animated cartoons on UniSZA students’ vocabulary knowledge than using the traditional method. The results of semi-structured interviews showed the positive responses from the respondents, who preferred animated cartoons as tools in improving their English vocabulary knowledge of rare words such as salubrious, cacophonous, grandiloquent and laconic. This study contributes to the current literature on the impact of teaching vocabulary of rare words using animated cartoons in generating students’ interest, improving their confidence, and satisfaction. This study is significant for English major and non-English major students to employ animated cartoons as a means of improving the vocabulary knowledge of rare words. Dissertations, Academic Thesis
