The differences in dialect and pronunciation have reduced the content and meaning of spoken words and influenced the maintenance of Jordanian culture. In most cases, dialectical variation causes communication breakdowns for non-Jordanian residents. The purpose of this study is to investigate dialect shift and preservation among the Syrian speech community of Jerash in Jordan. A mixed research method in the form of a case study, including a questionnaire and an interview, was used as research instruments. The questionnaire was designed to investigate language proficiency, fields of language use, and attitudes towards shifting from Syrian to Jordanian dialect, and it was completed by 100 respondents. The quantitative data was analyzed and discussed in depth using R-Programming, while the qualitative data was analyzed using the thematic analysis method. The study was conducted as an interview with 5 participants. The results of the study revealed that Syrians intended to preserve their dialect and culture all the time. The findings also revealed that Syrians shifted to local Jordanian in some situations, such as feasts, buying and selling, condolences, and weddings. The study further manifested a number of socio-demographic factors that affected the process of dialect and cultural maintenance among Syrian-speech society living in the city of Jerash. The findings also showed that Syrian males and females shifted from their dialect into English by using various English lexical items in different situations. The study concluded that Syrians tend to shift to Arabic more easily on some occasions. The study also found that gender played a considerable role in dialect shifting. The shift to English was mostly for learning, practice, prestige, and social status. The study contributes to the literature in ensuring the importance of protecting and preserving Syrian dialect in Jerash, Jordan. The current study reemphasizes the protection of the dialect against gradual disappearance.
