They are not proficient in English and they have little knowledge of technical aspects of academic writing. Despite these weaknesses, they manage to enrol into postgraduate studies especially at the universities which do not require IELTS or any other tests for entry requirement. They usually find it very difficult to engage in academic writing tasks required for their postgraduate studies. Very few studies have been conducted to reveal how JPS at Malaysian universities cope with this problem and to what extent institutional support related to academic writing is accessible to them. This study aims to explore academic writing problems encountered by JPS at a Malaysian university and to investigate how the JPS address the problems. Of interest is their views of the institutional support related to academic writing. Employing a case study approach, a total of 182 online questionnaires were administered via email to registered JPS at UniSZA to which 90 responses were received. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 17 of the respondents to get further clarification of the questionnaire data and to gain rich insights into the phenomenon being investigated. The findings reveal that JPS have several problems when engaging in academic writing. These problems are lack of vocabulary, difficulties in expressing the ideas, organizing the sentences and creating paragraphs, paraphrasing, the inability to build critical discussions and ideas, erroneous grammar, spellings, weak referencing and difficulty in finding the article/journal for literature review. In order to address these problems, they acquire help from their classmates, seniors, teaching faculties, participate in educational forums, workshops and lectures, attend paid tuition classes, translate Arabic to English, subscribe to journals and magazines and used online resources. In terms of institutional support, the JPS perceive the support as deficient with respect to availability of workshops and lectures on language proficiency, unsatisfactory supervision meetings with insufficient meeting hours and unmet support needs in terms of critical feedback and timely response from the supervisor. The JPS in Malaysia face difficulties in academic writing skills. A few factors such as supervisor and student relationship, improved supervision, and extensive language support at the university can aid to resolve problems related to academic writing and improve the institutional support required by the students in dealing with the problems. The university should ensure that the language needs of the students are addressed in order to support the students in their academic writing. The recommendations from the JPS, as revealed in this study, may help to resolve the problems faced by them and should be considered by the university to improve institutional support for postgraduate students.
