Therefore, Jordanian banks are under huge pressure since IT intensity and investment in IT remain high, but the economic values gained from the IT investment are often questionable. IT can no longer just increase productivity, but the focus must be to support the dynamic business of this sector to create competitive advantage. Furthermore, several studies indicate that the Jordanian banking sector with high IT intensity may suffer from insufficient IT supporting services and a lack of qualified IT staff. Based on the literature about IT capabilities, the sector would gain better profit by providing more systematic investment aimed at improving the technology delivery to enhance banking performance by creating and applying strategic IT and IT capabilities, and to answer the research question deeply regard the effect of IT capabilities on Jordanian banking sector firm performance. This study generates a practical knowledge that can be utilized by information technology and business managers in the banking sector for strategic and operational purposes. Methodology: The study looked at the impact of information technology capabilities on the competitive advantage and performance as a sequential transformative procedure that is characterised by the collection and analysis of quantitative data. This study used a questionnaire to collect and analyse data from 16 Jordanian banks, targeting a population of 855 Jordanian banks management staff, however only a sample of 265 were obtained from managers on perception of strategic IT capabilities and subsequent firm performance. SEM-PLS technique is used to test the measurement model and structural model. Results: The study has proven that all components of IT capabilities (IT-enabled organisational intangibles, physical IT infrastructure, and human IT resources) have a positive impact on the firm performance and all relationships between the constructs are significant. The results show that there is a small effect size of IT capabilities on the performance construct. Likewise, the findings reveal that there is a large effect size of IT capabilities on the competitive advantage construct and competitive advantage on the performance construct. The mediation effect of competitive advantage construct is also significant as indirect effect between IT capabilities and performance. Conclusion: This study contributes to the literature in several ways, including demonstrating how dynamic capability theory could interact with other strategic IT capabilities in light of the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm. By integrating theory and findings, implications for managerial practices are provided to facilitate managers in the Jordanian banking sector to shape the creation and development of valuable strategic IT capabilities in the future.
