However, little is known about its associated factor contribute to this burden. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of hypertension and its associated factors among Malay FELDA residents. This study consists of two phases using a cross-sectional study design. Phase I was a screening phase to determine the prevalence of hypertension in Malay adults resident in Terengganu FELDA. Four FELDAs (Belara, Kuala Terengganu; Selasih, Besut; Jerangau, Hulu Terengganu and Neram 2, Kemaman) were selected. Phase I has 157 participants, including 58, 28, 46 and 25 from FELDA Belara, Selasih, Neram 2, and Jerangau, respectively. Socio demographic, anthropometric and blood pressure were obtained in Phase I. The hypertensive residents identified in Phase I were enrolled in Phase II. The response rate for Phase I was 49.0% and Phase II was 32.5%. For Phase II, study outcomes on dietary intake, physical activity, stress level and knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) on salt intake were measured using 24 hours diet recall, short version International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and KAP WHO Questionnaire, respectively. The prevalence of hypertension (Phase I) was 32.5 %. Out of 157 participants, more than half were women (66.2%) and obese (52.9%) with the median age of 54.0 (21.0) years old. Majority had high risk for cardiovascular disease based on waist circumference (70.7%) and waist hip ratio (75.2%). The mean systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of 134.1 ± 17.1 mmHg and 80.9 ± 11.6 mmHg were observed. Age (p=0.001) were significantly associated with hypertension. Phase II showed that 66.7% of the participants were women with median age of 57.0 (7.0) years, married (80.4%) and received secondary education (60.8%) with mean household income RM1376.47 ± 393.87 (range RM250 to RM2500). Nearly half of them (49.0%) had blood pressure controlled with no co-morbidities (45.1%). 66.7% taking their anti-hypertensive medication with 91.2% of them complied with medication. Only, 9.8% were active smokers. Mean total energy intake was 1833 ± 629 kcal/day which comprised 100% carbohydrates (248.4 ± 88.8 g/day), 122.7% protein (70.3 ± 26.0 g/day), 100.0% fat (61.9 ± 33.7 g/day) and dietary fibre (4.4 ± 2.8 g/day). Sodium intake was 2770.1 ± 958.2 mg/day (138.5%) which exceeded the WHO recommendation. Participants showed moderate (47.1%) physical activity level with low stress level (86.3%). KAP of salt intake revealed that majority of the participants scored average for knowledge (98.0%), attitude (60.8%) and practice (78.4%) Multiple linear regression showed that no smoking (p=0.019), hip circumference (p=0.018) and dietary fibre (p=0.012) were significant predictors for SBP while age (p=0.002) and no smoking (p=0.041) were significant predictors for DBP. This cross-sectional study suggested that young age, no smoking, decreased hip circumference and high dietary fibre intake were associated with a low blood pressure. Knowledge, attitude and practice on salt and factors associated in this study can be used as a reference for intervention on reducing hypertension in the country mainly on rural area.
