However, at the heart of accomplishing these societal goals are the Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (SMEs). According to the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria, only about 36% of SMEs have insurance coverage. As a result, 22.9% experienced temporary closure, while 80% failed before five years. Consequently, Nigeria experiences a decline in nominal GDP from 9.9 to 8.01, a growth rate of -3.62%, an economic contraction of -2.48%, and an unemployment rate of 33.3%. This placed Nigeria's sustainability index score of 49.3 at 160th out of 166 member states in the United Nations (UN) sustainable development index, lagging behind the regional average of 53.1. This study aimed to determine the moderating effect of financial inclusion on the relationship between Risk Intelligence and sustainable performance of small and medium enterprises in Nigeria. The selection of financial inclusion as a moderating variable was based on a review of previous studies. The Risk Theory of Profit was used in the study. The study adopts a quantitative approach through the distribution of questionnaires to achieve the study's objectives. The sampling frame for the study comprise 73,081 SMEs registered with the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). Multi-stage sampling technique was used to draw a sample of 407 respondents. Structural Equation Modelling using AMOS 26 software was used for analysis. The study found statistically significant effects of risk intelligence on sustainable performance at 0.05. However, the effect of risk perception on economic sustainability was negative and insignificant, while between social sustainability was negatively significant at the 0.05 level. Also, the effect of insurance literacy on environmental sustainability was negatively significant at 0.01. Financial inclusion also moderates the relationship between risk intelligence and sustainable performance, except between risk-taking propensity and environmental sustainability and between insurance literacy and social sustainability. Finally, the result of the multi-group analysis revealed that moderation is more pronounced in SMEs with access to bank credit than otherwise. Theoretically, the study developed a new integrated framework that combines the risk intelligence factors and provided empirical support for financial inclusion's moderating role. The study has a substantial practical impact on SME managers, financial institutions, and other stakeholders by giving policy guidance that would shape their strategy. From the perspective of Nigerian SMEs, financial inclusion provides a valuable impetus toward achieving sustainability. Dissertations, Academic Sila masukkan subject wajib Dissertations, Academic.
