The growing challenges of global warming and climate change have called the attention of policymakers. Research indicates that carbon dioxide emissions (CO2 emissions) are the highest pollutant, causing a high death rate in developing countries. Due to extensive macroeconomic activities, CO2 emissions are among the main issues of climate change and sustainable development, particularly in developing African countries. The main purpose of this study is to examine the effect of economic growth, financial development, and foreign direct investment on the quality of the environment of six selected African countries throughout 1970-2019. Specifically, the study intends, first, to investigate the effect of economic growth, foreign direct investment, and financial development on the quality of environment in six selected African countries; second, to test the presence of environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis in six selected African countries; third, to examine the effect of the global oil crisis of 2014 on the quality of environment in six selected African countries; and fourth, to identify the major driving factor of environmental quality in response to changes in economic growth, foreign direct investment and financial development in six selected African countries. Panel data of six leading African countries from 1970 to 2019 were used. The study employed Cross-sectional Im, Pesaran and Cross-sectional Augmented Dickey-Fuller unit root test, Westerlund test of cointegration, the CS-ARDL estimator, and the Impulse Response Function and Variance Decomposition. The findings of the study revealed that economic growth, foreign direct investment, financial development, and energy consumption were positively related to CO2 emissions. The square of economic growth was negatively related to CO2 emissions, validating the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis in six selected African countries. The interaction terms of economic growth and financial development and foreign direct investment and financial development were positively related to CO2 emissions. The dummy of the 2014-2016 oil crisis was negatively related to CO2 emissions. The results of impulse response function and variance decomposition showed that the most significant factor affecting the quality of the environment was foreign direct investment in the short and medium run and economic growth in the long run. The study recommends adopting and integrating environmental policies into mainstream economic policies to tackle environmental problems while simultaneously inspiring economic growth. The African governments should incorporate environmental issues into their foreign investment and energy policies. The loans and incentives given by the banking industry should be geared to businesses that encourage sustainability or generate low CO2 emissions.
