This is because offenses such as prostitution, alcohol consumption, and gambling are not openly committed in the state. However, there are issues that are beyond the control of the authorities, such as usury which is being practiced by the conventional banks within the state, and malpractices in weighing and measure at the markets. Despite the fact that Muslims constitute over 90%o of the state population, grain trading practice in the major markets of the state face challenges of shari'ah compliance. Hence, this study aims at determining the principles of shari'ah compliance in grain trading and assessing the shari'ah compliance of the grain trading practice in Gujungu market which is a popular grain trading market in Jigawa State. The study proposes a grain trading method that complies with shari'ah. To achieve the objectives of this study, an ethnographic design was employed. The data was collected using documents, observations, and interviews. For the interviews, a sample of 1l participants was selected using maximal variation technique ofpurposive sampling; six from stakeholders and five from traders. The documents were analyzed using document analysis, while conventional content analysis of the qualitative method was used to analyze and validate the data obtained from the observations and the interviews. The study, based upon its objectives, found that for grain trading to be shari 'uh-compliant, it should meet the following requirements: First, avoid all the acts prohibited by the shari'ah. Second, the acceptable contracts in grain trading include; sale contracts and other shari'ah based contracts. Third, regulations should be made by the Govemment in order to conhol the conduct of the grain trading business which should be regulated, monitored and implernented at appropriate levels. The findings also revealed that a high level of malpractice in the weighing and measure, and the validity of the products exist in the grain trading practice at Gujungu market. Even though the study disclosed that efforts were made to tackle some of these challenges, it offered recommendations from the Islamic point of view. The study highlighted on Islamic Mu'amalat and draws the attention of Muslims in the state on the importance of shari'olt compliance in their business activities. The research proposed a shari'ah-compliant grain trading method, with recommendations on developing the present grain trading practice in Gujungu market, Jigawa State particularly and Nigeria generally, to be shnri 'ah-compliant. It emphasizes on the relevant authorities to make appropriate regulations and constitute regulatory bodies to monitor and implement the laws. Also, to set up institutions of leaming with standard curriculum that will train professional staff in the field of Islamic Mu'amalat. The study concludes that there is need for instilling the Islamic financial transactions laws and provisions into the present grain trading practice at Gujungu market and suggests for further studies on such markets from the Islamic economic perspective.
