Several of the key success factors are government support, training, financial capital and digital marketing. The global economic crisis and the trade tension between China and the United States of America (USA), and currently COVID-19 pandemic affect many companies to be shut down and eventually leads to higher unemployment. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play significant roles in providing employment opportunities, alleviating poverty, empowering communities, provision of goods and services, contributing toward the GDP, and achieving sustainable growth and development of the Indonesian economy. Based on the existing literature, four factors i.e government support, training, financial capital and digital marketing have been identified but only a few studies focused on risk control as a moderator in SMEs. This study examines the relationships between government support, training, financial capital, digital marketing and performance of SMEs in Indonesia, and also determines the moderator effect of risk control on the relationships between government support, training, financial capital, digital marketing and performance of SMEs. Sample size of 300 SMEs was drawn through simple random sampling out of the population of 1603 registered SMEs in Medan, Indonesia. Primary data was employed in this study and the data was collected through administering of close-ended structured questionnaires and 300 respondents respond to the questionnaires that were employed for analysis. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software was used to analyze the respondent’s profile while Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test the hypothesis of this study. The findings indicate that there are significant and positive relationship between government support, financial capital, digital marketing and performance of SMEs in Indonesia and risk control as moderator of relationships between government support, financial capital, digital marketing and performance of SMEs in Indonesia while result of training shows not significant. This means that the hypotheses had been achieved. This research identifies that the challenges faced by SMEs in Indonesia are related to government support, training, financial capital, digital marketing and risk control. Thus, it is recommended that the Government should undertake policy development work aimed at making access to fund easier for SMEs with growth potential and reduce the interest rate. The Government should also encourage the SMEs entrepreneurs to make use of Entrepreneur Development Program (EDP) that is aimed at improving the skill level in the SMEs sector.
