Health is the greatest asset of human existence, happiness and precision of purpose, without such nothing else seems possible. Around the world, people's health and well-being seem to be of utmost importance to the governments of many countries. It is no wonder that healthy people are those who can sustain the life of humanity and are very important for development, positive growth and wealth creation in society. Historically, traditional healthcare has been an integral part of the healthcare system for survival when there are health problems among many cultures and peoples virtually in all many societies, nations and countries around the globe, Nigeria inclusive. Therefore, the objectives of this study are summarised as follows: (i) to describe the status of traditional healthcare knowledge and practice among Egbejila community; (ii) to investigate factors contributing to the routine utilization of traditional healthcare among Egbejila community; and (iii) to examine the emerging trends in traditional healthcare practices among Egbejila community. The study was conducted using a qualitative technique by adopting an ethnographic approach. Research data was collected through interviews, observation and content analysis. Data was collected from 25 informants consisting of 10 traditional medicine practitioners and 15 community members who actively use traditional medicine. The data collected were analysed using the QSR NVivo software. The findings made from this study revealed that there are manifold traditional practitioners in the Egbejila community providing healthcare services to the inhabitants. Moreover, perceived aetiology of illness, diagnostic approaches, common illnesses and forms of healthcare practices were divulged in the study. Furthermore, the research study identified that most inhabitants are highly motivated and had a high conviction and preference to use traditional healthcare based on the following ample themes: holistic and natural factors; affordability, accessibility and availability; health peculiarity and therapeutic effectiveness; firm cultural beliefs and identities; proximity and acclamation among others. In addition, this study identifies developments such acknowledging orthodox diagnosis result tests; engaging the service of auxiliary nurses; commercialization and commodification of services rendered etc. as emerging trends in the healthcare system. In view of the above, the study concludes that traditional healthcare should be given formal recognition and integrate it into the Nigeria formal health system.
