Previous studies also reported that among the major issues face by Jordanian universities were poor market orientation, insufficient knowledge management and absence of favourable organizational culture. Recognizing quality to be a key focus on improvement of performance, therefore this study was conducted to examine the impact of total quality management, knowledge management and organizational culture on organizational performance in Jordanian higher-education institutions. This study also examined the mediating role of market orientation and the moderating role of competitive intensity. The study was based on a sample gathered from top management of Jordanian universities, using a self-administered questionnaire. A total of 300 copies of the questionnaire were distributed. Therefore, 249 completed questionnaires were retrieved, giving a response rate of 83 percent of the original sample. The research model was empirically tested using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Analysis of a Moment Structures (AMOS) software. The finding of SEM revealed a positive and significant relationship between knowledge management, organizational culture and market orientation on performance of higher education institutions in Jordan. Meanwhile, results of this study do not support the study hypothesis between total quality management and organizational performance. Market orientation was found to mediate the relationship between total quality management and organizational performance, as well as the relationship between organizational culture and performance of higher-education institutions in Jordan. However, market orientation did not mediate the relationship between knowledge management and organizational performance. In addition, the study found that competitive intensity moderates the relationship between market orientation and organizational performance. The findings of this study provided insights to top managements with regard to the importance of establishing quality orientation strategies in higher education sector. The results of this study also able to raise awareness among the leadership of higher education institutions on the importance of knowledge management, market orientation and organizational culture. Finally, the study calls for researchers to use this model in studying organizational performance in other context such as service industry.
