This situation created an underlying problem to the prison management as a result of lack of control over the increasing number of inmates that caused overcrowding in the Malaysian prisons. In addition, it was reported that one of the reasons contributing to the overcrowding in the prison was the increased in drug-related offenses. Generally, it was reported that the majority of drug-abuse inmates’ quality of life (QoL) was lower compared to the other groups of inmates in the same prison. Similarly, it was reported that the incidents of reoffending was higher among the drug-abuse inmates compared to other inmates. Improving QoL of drug-abuse inmates was important to reduce reoffending and assist them to reintegrate into the community. Literature proved that prison climate played an important role to improve drug-abuse inmates’ life satisfaction which eventually could improve QoL. Although there were studies that postulated prison climate had influenced inmates’ QoL, but, there was no study that examined the interrelationships of prison climate, life satisfaction, and QoL simultaneously, especially among drug-abuse inmates in Malaysia. Thus, the aim of the study was to investigate the relationships between prison climate, life satisfaction, and QoL among drug-abuse inmates. Specifically, the objectives of the study were firstly, to examine the relationships between prison climate and QoL. Secondly, the study examined the effect of prison climate on life satisfaction. The third objective was to examine the effect of life satisfaction on QoL. The final objective was to examine the mediating role of life satisfaction on the relationship between prison climate and QoL. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires after conducting pre-test and pilot test. A total of 376 drug-abuse inmates in Peninsular Malaysian prisons were involved in this study. The respondents were selected using sampling frame from the name list provided by the prison management. The selection of the respondents was conducted using simple random sampling technique using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science). The questionnaire comprised of four sections measuring prison climate, life satisfaction, and QoL. The last part of the questionnaire captured the respondents’ profile. The proposed model and research hypotheses were tested using Path Analysis in Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The findings of the study supported the four proposed hypotheses. In addition, the study discovered that life satisfaction partially mediated the relationship between prison climate and QoL. The findings of this study contributed to the theoretical implications which suggested a structural model that examine the relationships among prison climate, life satisfaction, and QoL using Maqasid Shariah approach. Prison management gained insights on predicting factors that could improve drug-abuse inmates’ life satisfaction and QoL. Drug-abuse inmates could benefit from the programme or policy developed by the prison management to improve their QoL. Dissertations, Academic Sila masukkan subject wajib Dissertations, Academic.
