In Peninsular Malaysia, there are seven varieties that can been found including var. trengganuensis, var. kunstleri, var. deltoidea, var. angustifolia, var. bilobata, var. motleyana and var. intermedia. The conventional identification of Ficus deltoidea varieties based on the morphology had caused some confusion to the taxonomists. There are varieties which shared similar characters and some of the accessions within varieties that showed different character states. Previous study on Ficus deltoidea only focused either on morphological aspect or molecular aspect without combination of both fields. Therefore, this research provides information from both morphology and molecular aspects which can help taxonomists and researchers in resolving the relationships of Ficus deltoidea varieties. In this study, phylogenetic relationships of 21 accessions of seven Ficus deltoidea varieties in Peninsular Malaysia and two outgroups, which are Ficus pumila and Ficus carica, were analysed based on morphological data and supported by molecular data. Four primer regions which are Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS), External Transcribed Spacer (ETS), Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3pdh) and Inter-Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR) were used to obtain molecular data, and 32 characters were measured and observed for morphological data. Based on the morphological data, Ficus deltoidea varieties in Peninsular Malaysia have formed a monophyletic dendrogram for both neighbour-joining (NJ) and maximum parsimony (MP) analyses. ITS and ETS regions provided the best dendrogram in resolving the relationships of Ficus deltoidea varieties in Peninsular Malaysia for molecular data. However, the phylogenetic trees constructed for both G3pdh and ISSR primers were not well resolved as most of the accessions were scattered around within the dendrogram and low bootstrap support was produced, respectively. Despite of the not resolving-well phylogenetic trees of G3pdh and ISSR primers, the combination of all four primer regions used and morphological data produced the best well-constructed phylogenetic trees for the Ficus deltoidea varieties in Peninsular Malaysia. Thus, this finding give clearer information to the taxonomists and researchers regarding Ficus deltoidea varieties and their relationships. From this study, it can be concluded that molecular data is very important to determine the varietal relationships in addition to morphological data for Ficus deltoidea. 2018-08-20 Dissertations, Academic Sila masukkan subject wajib Dissertations, Academic untuk semua tesis..
