DELTOIDEA CORNER (MASTER_2018).pdf Nurul Hafiza Al Abadiyah Binti Ralmi 2017_Effects of Hydrogen Peroxide on Growth, Mineral Accumulation and Root Knot Nematode Control of Ficus deltoidea Jack var. deltoidea Corner Ficus deltoidea, commonly known as mas cotek, is a Malaysian medicinal plant of commercial interest. It is an evergreen perennial herb which exhibits a slow growth and is subjected to nematode infestation when grown under field conditions. The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on the growth, mineral accumulation and root knot nematode control of Ficus deltoidea Jack var. deltoidea Corner. The experiments were carried out at the research farm of Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Besut Campus from February, 2015 to December, 2016. The experiments were in a completely randomized design (CRD) manner with 7 replications. Hydrogen peroxide at 0 (control), 15, 30, 60 and 90 mM were injected into the root zone of mas cotek plants. The results showed that the treatment of hydrogen peroxide enhanced net photosynthesis, growth and biomass accumulation of mas cotek. The application of 90 mM H2O2 significantly increased plant height, number of leaves, number of syconium and biomass yield of the plant. In addition, root growth which includes root crown diameter, root length, root volume, root tips, number of root and root biomass (fresh and dry), also showed the highest value with the application of 90 mM of H2O2. Besides that, elements As and Sb content decreased as the amount of H2O2 increased. Furthermore, 90 mM H2O2 and 60 mM H2O2 were the best treatment for nutrient Mg, Ca, Na and K accumulation in the leaf and syconium, whereas nutrient Fe was observed highest in control plants rather than in the treated ones. For root knot nematode control, 60 mM H2O2 treatment produced less number of root galls in Ficus deltoidea compared to the control, while, injection with 90 mM of H2O2 showed no root gall formation in the experimental plants, which proved that at high concentrations, H2O2 protected nematode infestation under BRIS soil condition. In addition, no nematodes were observed in roots of plants treated with 60 and 90 mM under scanning electron microscopy. From this study, it can be concluded that injection of 90 and 60 mM H2O2 to the root zone of mas cotek plant once a week increased photosynthesis, plant growth, mineral accumulation as well as helped in reduce nematode infestation in the problematic BRIS soil conditions.
