MSEs significantly reduce unemployment, create new jobs, increase income distribution, reduce poverty, increase export and others. Several studies have shown numerous factors preventing entrepreneurs from succeeding in Indonesia, such as lack of internal and external environmental support, inadequate capital and others. Furthermore, there have been numerous incidents in Indonesia whereby dissatisfied entrepreneurs quit their business. Therefore, this study aims to identify the relationship between entrepreneurial competence, government support, the influence of the entrepreneur environment on entrepreneurial satisfaction in Indonesia, the mediating effects of firm performance and the moderating role of education and gender. This study adopts a positivist and quantitative approach. Micro and Small Enterprises in Pekanbaru, Riau Province, Indonesia, were selected as the sample. A Simple random sampling method is used to obtain the data. Four hundred questionnaires were distributed to respondents, and 390 questionnaires (98%) were returned. This study uses a survey directly visiting MSEs with a fairly high response from companies. From the 390 data returned, about 10% of the questionnaires were incomplete and could not be analyzed. There were 380 completed questionnaires for analysis. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) techniques used to test the theoretical framework. Results showed that both entrepreneurial competence and the entrepreneur environment have positively and significantly affected firm performance. However, government support has insignificant impact on firm performance. Furthermore, competence, environment, and firm performance have a significant effect on entrepreneur satisfaction. This study also provides credible evidence that firm performance partially mediates the relationship between entrepreneur competence, environment, and entrepreneurial satisfaction. Meanwhile, entrepreneurs' gender status and education prove any difference in entrepreneurial competence and entrepreneurial satisfaction in Indonesia. This study can significantly assist in providing an optimal understanding of existing and potential entrepreneurs in Pekanbaru City, Riau, Province Indonesia. This information can help in reducing the risk of MSE failure and increase the chances of success for businesses to continue growing, and ultimately supporting the Indonesian economy's growth and development. The most significant implication of this finding is that the results provide entrepreneurs and business owners with a better understanding of the factors that significantly affect firm performance and entrepreneur satisfaction. When MSE entrepreneurs are satisfied with their business performance, they tend to continuously perform adequately. For the government, this research will help to issue policies related to infrastructure development, business regulation, taxation, and financing to promote MSE companies in Indonesia.
