Therefore, nursing students have high tendency to experience stress and anxiety. Anxiety therapy which encompasses mind and body (bio-psycho-social domains) would be helpful for them. Hypnotherapy is a type of mind and body therapy that can induce calmness and strengthen inner self. This study examines the effect of hypnotherapy on exam anxiety among the first-year nursing students in School of Nursing Science, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA). Sixty first-year nursing students participated in this interventional study. The intervention includes four hypnotherapy sessions that were conducted weekly by trained hypnotherapist. The hypnotherapy sessions started eight weeks prior to second semester’s exam. Outcome of hypnotherapy were assessed by measuring the exam anxiety level using questionnaire and clinical measurements. Exam anxiety level was assessed using Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI), which is a self-administered questionnaire, consists of 20 items covering two domains: worry and emotionality. Clinical assessments for anxiety include serum cortisol and vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate). The measurements were done twice, where first measurement was one day before exam in semester one (pre-hypnotherapy) and the second measurement was one day before exam in semester two (post-hypnotherapy). Prior to hypnotherapy sessions, almost all first-year nursing students experienced exam anxiety; mild (36.7%), moderate (58.3%), severe (3.3%). Regression analysis showed that the anxiety level was significantly associated with gender (p=0.04) and serum cortisol (p=0.001). The mean difference of exam anxiety (TAI) score between pre and post hypnotherapy sessions was statistically significant (p <0.001). The mean difference of serum cortisol level between pre and post hypnotherapy sessions was statistically significant (p <0.001). This study found that hypnotherapy is an effective tool in the management of exam anxiety among the nursing students. It is recommended that hypnotherapy is introduced as one of the supplementary module in the students’ curriculum. Dissertations, Academic Sila masukkan subject wajib Dissertations, Academic.
