Being a lifestyle disease, diabetes mellitus requires multi-pronged approaches in it’s management. Self care practice plays a very crucial role in diabetic care. A cross-sectional study was carried out to investigate diabetes self-care practice and the factors influencing it among Type II diabetes mellitus patients attending the out-patient clinics in four governmental hospitals located in Irbid city, Jordan. The eligible participants were selected via systematic random sampling. The main inclusion criteria was: those who confirm diagnosis of type II diabetes mellitus from the clinic record. The Diabetes Self-Management Questionnaire (DSMQ) adapted from The Research Institute of the Diabetes Academy Mergentheim in Germany was used to examine the diabetes self care practice. A total of 219 respondents completed the questionnaire. The result showed a low mean value of self-care practice score among the respondents. The most common self-care practices reported were taking the diabetes medication as prescribed by the doctor, and strictly adhering to the dietary recommendation as specified by their physician. The factors found to be significantly associated with better self-care practice were: having higher education (95% CI of β: 0.77, 2.00), lower BMI (95% CI of β: -0.37, -0.18), high monthly income (95% CI of β: 0.61, 1.74 ), having some form of health insurance (95% CI of β: 0.44, 3.41), shorter duration of diabetes (95% CI of β: -0.13, -0.03 and not having co-morbidities (95% CI of β: -1.32, -0.07). It is important for health care providers to take into consideration these advocating self care practice among diabetic patients.
