Disordered eating among adolescents is a community health challenge because it will bring negative impacts toward physical and mental health of adolescents. Early identification of disordered eating behaviour will help to prevent the evolution of eating disorder in later life as well as lead to early treatment. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the risk factors that elevate the incidence of disordered eating among adolescents. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of disordered eating and its associated factors among secondary-school adolescents in Terengganu. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 732 school-going adolescents aged between 14 and 18 years in Terengganu. Cluster sampling technique was applied to select the secondary-school adolescents. A self-administered validated questionnaire was used. The validated Eating Attitude Test (EAT-26) was used to screen for disordered eating behaviour. Psychological factors were measured using validated Malay version of Strength and Difficulties Questionnaires (SDQ). Simple and multiple logistic regressions were applied to test for the significant associated factors of disordered eating. The prevalence of disordered eating among adolescents was 30.1% (95% CI= 27, 33). The study revealed that the associated factors for disordered eating were age (OR=1.21, CI=1.06, 1.39), emotional problem (OR=1.16, CI=1.03, 1.31) and peer pressure (OR=1.26, CI=1.10, 1.44). Binary logistic regression showed body mass index (BMI) or any forms of substance use were not significantly associated with disordered eating among adolescents. The study revealed the prevalence of disordered eating among secondary school adolescents Terengganu was relatively moderate. The factors that associated with disordered eating among adolescents are age, emotional problem and peer. Thus, screening for disordered eating among secondary-school adolescents is crucial for physcobehavioural (emotional problem, peer pressure) interventions in preventing potential harmful complications associated with it.
