The prevalence of SSI varies globally but had been reported to as high as 30 percent. In Saudi itself studies have shown an increase in incidence of SSI. Moreover, investigations on the knowledge and practice of nurses in preventing SSI have confirmed significant gaps. The magnitude of this clinical problem should be investigated, and proper prevention strategies and health care remedies need to be established. Nurses play an important role in patient care and this includes prevention of SSI. Therefore, this study sought to assess the knowledge, attitude and determine their association with practice regarding the prevention of SSI among nurses working in selected governmental hospitals in Al-Medinah Al-Munawarah, Saudi Arabia. This cross-sectional study recruited 468 respondents from two governmental hospitals via simple random sampling and collected data using a set of validated questionnaires previous studies. The Cronbach’s alpha obtained from reliability test run were 0.84 for knowledge, 0.88 for practice and 0.63 for attitude. The respondents’ total knowledge score was ranged from 7 to 25 with mean score of 14.38 (4.34) meanwhile their attitude score was ranged from 14 to 20 with mean value of 18.32 (0.87). After running multiple linear regression analysis using forward likelihood method, total knowledge scores (p <0.001), total attitude scores (p <0.001), working in ophthalmology department (p <0.001) and working in O&G department (p =0.047) were found to have statistically significant association with practice of prevention of SSI among the respondents. Based on the findings, nurses with higher knowledge and attitude scores had significant higher practice scores of SSI prevention. The nurses working in ophthalmology and O&G department had significant lower scores of preventive practices. To improve the nurses’ preventive skills, activities such as close supervision, in-service training, up-to-date guideline development and hands-on practice are needed. In fact, the continuous medical education program of SSI prevention should be strengthened in the curriculum of nursing schools.
