Most countries of the world are now members of at least one regional organization. The need for security has been the overall idea for regional organizations. As such, nations form alliances with numerous organizations to achieve their objectives. Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established on 8th August 1967 with the signing of Bangkok Declaration which served as an initiative for peace and stability in the region. Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), on the other hand, was established on 28th May 1975 via a treaty signed in Lagos, with the intention of ensuring peace and security in the region. The objective of this research is to examine the principle of non-interference of the two organizations on security issues. The principle of non-interference cannot be examined without discussing the security challenges of each organization. Finally, the research compares the case of Rohingya and Gambia to determine their regional responses. The study employed qualitative method of data analysis, in which interview and document analysis were used. Rohingya conflict and Gambian political crisis were selected as case study. Interview was conducted with twelve participants from ASEAN and ECOWAS to examine the security challenges related to the principle of non-interference, conflict resolution and the role of the selected organizations in ensuring peace and security in their regions. Document analysis was conducted from the treaties of the organizations. Inductive thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data. The findings revealed that ASEAN and ECOWAS adopt different approaches in resolving their respective regional disputes. It was also found that ASEAN and ECOWAS emerged in order to resolve regional security problems. Both organizations adopt regional integration as a means of fostering regional stability, building prosperity, and addressing international challenges. ASEAN non-interference is effective as evident in the case of Rohingya ethnic minority of Myanmar while ECOWAS non-interference is replaced by “responsibility to protect” as observed in its interference in the Gambian political crisis. ASEAN and ECOWAS have formed alliances in order to safeguard their regional affairs and defend their interests. However, each organization embarked on different patterns toward achieving its regional objectives. Abdullahi Shehu Yusuf Dissertations, Academic Sila masukkan subject wajib Dissertations, Academic.
