IN TERENGGANU.pdf Munirah Binti Bakar @ Samsuddin 2014_The Distribution and Variability of Dioscorea Hispida Dennst. in Terengganu Copyright©PWB2025 Dioscorea hispida Dioscorea hispida, locally known as ubi gadong in Malaysia, belongs to the Dioscoreaceae family. This species has become a side dish to some villagers in Terengganu especially in the rural area for the last decade. Nevertheless, the limited distribution of this species in Terengganu has resulted in depleted germplasms. Besides, there was problem in determination of its variability in terms of variety. The very rare production of flowers had resulted in the difficulty of varietal identification of this species. So, the objectives of this study were to determine the pattern of morphological variability and distribution in the studied population. ln this study, the distributions of D. hlsplda plants were determined by recording the growth areas of D. hispida and mapping them by using the Diva-Gis software. The variability study or differences between population was carried out by measuring the parameters such as plant height, diameter of stem, the distance between two petioles, petiole length, number of leaves, leaves area, length of tuber, width of tuber, number of new tuber and color of tuber. The results showed that the habitats ol D. hispida were mostly in lhe rural area and mainly located near the river. lnstead of that, there was no significant difference in the morphological characteristics between populations of D. hispida that were studied. This study also reveal()d that the analysis of DNA sequences by using the lnternal Transcribed Spacer (lTS) on the nucleotide (nt) sequence of DNA had improved the evolution development data of D. hispida. Thus, D. hlsprda was closely related to D. japonica with difference of nucleotide at nt 310.
