As such, factors influencing their job performance become equally important. Job satisfaction is a known factor, whereas Islamic work ethics (IWE) is a new factor that has been shown to impact the HCPs' job performance. This study aims to examine the direct relationship between job satisfaction and job performance, the mediating role of IWE, and the moderating role of hospital type (public & private). This is a cross-sectional study conducted in two stages, 1) pilot study for the development and validation of three study tools (job performance, job satisfaction, and IWE), and 2) actual study to investigate the relationship between HCPs' job satisfaction, performance, IWE, and hospital type. The initial stage was conducted online via Google Forms from April to May 2020 among 107 HCPs in Jordan EDs, recruited by convenient sampling. The construct validity of the tools was determined through exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and the reliability was tested using Cronbach alpha. The second stage was conducted from June to August 2020, involving 299 HCPs from 11 public and private hospitals in Jordan, selected by stratified random sampling method. Regression analysis was used to assess the direct relationship between job satisfaction and performance, the mediating role of IWE and the moderating role of hospital types. The construct validity of the job performance scale yielded 11 items on a two dimension scale: job quality and job time. The construct validity of the job satisfaction scale revealed 17 items in a four-dimension scale: physical environment and workplace safety, supervisor support, promotion and compensation, and colleagues' communication and relationship, in addition to one item for the global job satisfaction scale. The construct validity of the IWE scale revealed 17 items in a three-dimension scale: obligation of HCP to their patients, obligation of supervisors to their subordinates, and obligation of HCP to their colleagues. Cronbach's alpha for the three tools was above 0.90. Subsequently, in the actual study, regression analysis showed a significant positive relationship between job satisfaction dimensions and job performance (p <0.001), except for the compensation and promotion dimension (p=0.192). The analysis also showed a significant relationship between job satisfaction, IWE, and job performance. IWE showed a partial mediation role between job satisfaction and job performance apart from the colleagues' communication and relationship dimension that showed full mediation. On the contrary, the analysis showed no significant role of hospital type as a moderator on the relationship between job satisfaction, IWE, and job performance. The findings of partial mediation imply that there is not only a significant relationship between the IWE and job performance but also some direct relationship between job satisfaction and job performance. The study highlights the potential of IWE in, which, from a managerial perspective, should be given more attention so that we can improve the HCPs' job performance and eventually improve patients‘ outcomes in ED.
