The majority of crimes are related to domestic violence. The well-being and the happiness of the marriage are also being disrupted. Subsequently, it will cause a broken family institution and destroy the life of society. Furthermore, the intervention of treatment on the opiate users and their spouses is less emphasized due to lack of information regarding the factors that influence domestic violence. This results in the ineffectiveness of drug rehabilitation program. To date, there are not many studies being conducted concerning the relationship between the opiate dependence people and domestic violence, hence causing a lack of attention and action be taken by the authorities. Therefore, this study is aimed to identify negative behaviours among opiate users and mean changes in negative behaviors in households by opiate users after undergoing TGM treatment compared to before treatment at Bukit Tunggal Health Clinic and Saadah Community Center. The samples were chosen because of the problems arise among the opiate users’ family. A cross-sectional study was conducted within six months by distributing a set of questionnaire forms to drug users (n=90) who were receiving MMT program in Kuala Terengganu. Statistical analysis was conducted by using descriptive analysis and paired t-test in quantitative studies. Data were analysed by using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 22.0 software. There are significant changes of mean between negative behaviours of opiate dependence individuals before and after they underwent MMT treatment (P≤0.05) particularly on their perception that domestic violence is a crime, the better behaviour of their partner towards the respondents and the improvement of negative behavior of the respondents themselves in the household (mean between 2.33 and 3.65). Analysis of data showed that most of them started to take drugs before marriage (86%). The history of violence is not the main factor that causes negative behaviours because 80% of respondents do not have violence history. The negative behaviours are based on their choice such as hurting their spouse (94%), feeling satisfied after doing the violence (97%) and considering the violence towards their spouse as a joke (98%). Some respondents also are forcing their spouses to do sex (71%) and threatening to kill (85%). The majority of the respondents agreed that the influence of drugs gives their bad attitude towards their spouse. In summary, opiate dependence had a significant effect on the negative behaviours in the household that can further cause domestic violence. The family’s attitude towards them also influences the negative behaviours. Therefore, drastic actions need to be taken by the authorities to address the key factors involving drug addiction issues in order to prevent domestic violence in marriage.
