The study focuses on scrutinizing the processes of the river plan change based on classification using Types of Lateral Activity (TYLAT) and Modes of Meander Movement (MOME) through Geographic Information System ArcGIS software and Remote Sensing (RS) database. A total of 29 sampling stations were chosen in this study to represent the mainstream of Terengganu River water quality using Water Quality Index (WQI). Besides that, a spatial model of the WQI was applied along the mainstream of Terengganu River, using an interpolation tool known as Inverse Distance Weighing (IDW) in GIS. The results obtained reveals that Terengganu River has been going through certain river plan changes due to increase and decrease in the river plan. An increase up to 154.67 hectares and decrease which is up to 17.90 hectares within 2010 to 2015 and with different classification of changes based on TYLAT and MOME. Based on WQI analysis, the classification of water quality is under class III for wet season (January 2016) and dry season (July 2016). Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) was used to observe the relationship between river plan change and water quality during wet and dry season. Wet season showed a strong relationship between DO and river plan change which value of R2 = 0.995, TSS with R2 = 0.764 and WQI with R2 = 0.928. During dry season a weak linear relationship was recorded with R2 = 0.451, while, TSS and WQI showed the strong linear relationship with R2 = 0.997 and R2 = 0.985. Respectively, results of spatial model has shown a range of pollution from upstream to the downstream, revealing the downstream to be most polluted compared to middle stream and upstream which is as a result of river processes, land use, erosion processes, human activities among others. This study proved the efficiency of GIS in the assessment between the river plan change and parameters of WQI to determine the level of river water quality as influenced by river plan change. MLR states a statistical relationship between river plan changes to water quality and IDW analysis showed a spatial interpolation model. This study will appropriately aid the local enforcement to determining the problems of the river management.
