In the last century, water resources were affected by many reasons that caused water pollution. Water quality is important to control pollution that affects human health, animals, plants, and the ecosystem. The water quality was studied to ensure the validity of water use for humans, animals and plants, and to know the appropriate uses for it. The Zarqa River is one of the most important rivers in Jordan, the river has been exposed to many environmental problems and pollution. The aim of this study is to evaluate the water quality status in the Zarqa River. In this study, the morphological characteristics of the river basin were studied to know the effect of these characteristics on the water quality by using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Secondary data was used in this study to assess the water quality through calculating the Water Quality Index (WQI). In addition, a spatial model for the WQI was applied using the interpolation tool known as kriging in GIS. The study had identified the geomorphological characteristics of the Zarqa River basin by using the Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Additionally, this study had assessed the water quality of the Zarqa River using WQI, secondary data of water quality were used, these data were collected by the Water Authority of Jordan in the year 2018. The data comprised of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Total Suspended Solid (TSS), pH, Ammoniacal Nitrogen (AN), the water quality of the Zarqa River was measured and classified using the National Water Quality Standard (NWQS) and DOE-WQI. The water quality of the Zarqa River was categorized under the ranged classes of I to IV. The values of WQI for every month of 2018 were ranged from 50.04 in February to 58.66 in January. Based on these results and according to NWQS, the water of the Zarqa River is classified under class III that indicated moderately polluted water that needs extensive treatment. Lastly, the development of a spatial distribution model had been accomplished represented two levels: IV and III. This study demonstrated the efficiency of GIS in knowing the relationship between the morphological characteristics of the river basins and water quality, and kriging showed a spatial model of WQI. This study will suitably help in the management of river problems, assisting the local authorities and decision makers in identifying the status of the water quality and aid future planning and decision making regarding the Zarqa River.
